Dichroic glass "dew drops."

Since I'm home sick and dead tired, I wanted something mindless to do... cutting out squares of glass and firing them into droplets fit the bill nicely. I took a nap while they cooled.

The first pic shows them in the kiln, lit only by the glow of 1800 degrees. :D The second is the finished dots.

Pretty, no? Every time I make a batch of these, I feel like some South African diamond cartel might come and take me out... These dots come in handy as accents and design elements on other pieces, so it helps to have a supply on hand. Whee!

reminds me of making silver blobs and globs back in my jewelry-making days.

And do you know how to make gold granules for granulated pieces? You take gold dust and scraps, mix it with charcoal dust, and put it in a crucible in a kiln at the right temp (just above the melting-point) for a bit. When it cools, you sift the dust through a series of mesh screens, catching ever-finer, perfectly round golden globes.

I've heard of another method which was to put little chips on a tilted charcoal block, then hit them with the torch... they melt into blobs and roll down the block into... water, I think it was?

But that wouldn't be as small as what you're describing!

I actually managed to food poison myself, methinks. I'd describe what happened, but I'm tired of retching. ;)

Thank you! :D

By the way, I have Claire's pendant done! I'll post a pic soon. Hopefully tonight. It's still cooling.

Hm! I never thought about selling them individually. They're pretty easy to make so I could sell 'em for $1 each, I suppose. The thing is though, I can't really predict the colors or sizes... it doesn't work out very evenly all the time, and the colors shift in the kiln.

I used to make a lot of insect sculpture, but not anymore. I could etch some insect designs onto flat glass, probably -- in fact that's one of my planned projects. :)
